How to Rock the new Eyewear Trend

A new style of glasses has been popularising in the fashion world and the street-style scene: round, thin frames with a touch of geek-chic. While oversized, chunky silhouttes have been omnipresent in the past years, this new look is the cooler and more modern sister of thick-rimmed eyewear. The same counts in the sunglasses department: you can stow away your Wayfarers and give those Aviators a rest, because round sunglasses are the shape for this coming season.

So I decided to track down a pair of round frames for myself and discovered a Munich based eye-wear brand, who has been introducing this trend already a while ago: MUNIC Eyewear. I spent an afternoon at their offices to talk about what materials, shapes and colours are hot this summer, how to rock the geeky-chic trend, and how to find the frames, which pair best with your face shape.munic eyewear trend

INTERVIEW WITH MUNIC CHEF DESIGNER MARCUS RIESS:
IS THE NEW ROUND RIM SHAPE FOR EVERYONE? WHAT FRAME SHAPES FIT WHICH FACE SHAPE BEST AND WHAT’S THE RIGHT COLOUR CHOICE?

Generally speaking, round rimmed glasses suit slim and long faces best, however the most important thing is, that whichever eyewear you chose, it looks harmonious on your face. If you have a round/oval face, make sure that the design of your glasses isn’t too high, in order to make your face look longer. The eyebrows should close up with the upper line of your glasses and the colour of the frame should harmonise with the colour of your hair and the complexion of your skin. Pastel coloured frames can enhance the colour of your eyes.Photo 03-04-16 12 43 37 (1)Photo 12-04-16 17 06 20

SPEAKING OF TRENDS, WHAT COMES, WHAT GOES?

Slightly oversized, round and thin-rimmed frames are definitely the new trend. A new vintage style-mix from the 60ies, 80ies and 90ies, made from acetate, metal or titanium, with a light and casual look. Metal frames come in opaque black and gold. Transparent hues, such as aqua and vintage rose, taupe, oyster and nude are the rising trend for acetate glasses. Classics such as Havana brown and black stay. Thick-rimmed nerd frames are out.Photo 15-04-16 14 05 11

WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE WHEN LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT SPECS?

For me personally, style and quality are the most important criteria, when choosing eyewear. Extremely dominant designs aren’t my style, I believe in laid-back, confident and authentic designs, which underline the personality and character, rather than changing someone’s looks. Not too much, not too little, just the right amount. That’s why MUNIC’s claim is “frame your personality”.munic eywear

HOW HAS WEARING GLASSES BECOME FASHIONABLE?

While eye-wear used to be considered a “visual aid”, glasses are now seen as an accessory, which makes part of an outfit and has the same importance as a handbag or a pair of shoes. The trendiest designer boots are worth nothing, if you’re wearing ugly glasses.
